Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How long is your season? When does it start?

Our season for 11U-18U usually starts around the last week of September with practices and/or league games. The season wraps up in February or early March with playoffs.

Registration for 2023-24 will open in mid July.

When and where are practices?

Practices are held once weekly between Monday and Friday, usually between 6 and 9pm. They are held at school gyms in north east Edmonton. Teams are assigned a time slot at the beginning of the season. There are no practices on days when school gyms are closed (such as school events, holidays, or election days). Practice gym schedules are not available until September when the school board releases them to community groups.

When and where are games?

Games are held at the EYBA Centre, Saville Community Sports Centre, Legacy Centre or school gyms in Edmonton and the surrounding area.
Community games are usually held on Saturdays.
Tier 1 and 2 games (Competitive division) for girls are held on Wednesdays, and for boys are on Tuesdays.

Who can play for NEBA?

Children aged 6-17 who live in north east Edmonton.

The boundaries of the North East Zone are east of 97th street, and north of the North Saskatchewan River, out to city limits.

How do you make teams?

All children are placed in divisions (9U-18U) based on their year of birth. Children may not play down from their age division. Children may be moved up a division if requested, and provided there is room in that division.

Competitive teams are determined by evaluations. Players who do not attend evaluations cannot be placed on a competitive team.

Community teams are created taking into consideration information such as friend requests, restrictions to practice nights, and previous experience with NEBA.

Does my child have to try out for a team?

No - all children are eligible to play in the Community program, regardless of ability or experience, and will be placed on a team (no tryouts, no cuts, all players will be placed on a team).

If a player wishes, they may choose to attend evaluations in order to participate in a competitive division for 13U and 15U. Teams will be made only if there are enough registrations at these age groups. Evaluations are usually in late August or early September. Those who do not make a competitive team will be placed in the community program stream.

Coaching

NEBA requires coaches for each team in our program - the number of teams in the program will be limited by the number of volunteer coaches.
All coaches are required to provide a criminal record check.
Coaches are encouraged to attend a fundamentals basketball clinic, and are encouraged to take further coaches training (NEBA will cover the costs of this training).
Volunteer expectations as a coach are one practice weekly, one game weekly, attending coaches meetings, picking up and dropping off team equipment.

Why do parents have to complete a volunteer commitment (bingo, casino, or other activity)?

In order to keep our fees low, each family is required to assist with a bingo, casino, or other events where the Executive requires assistance.

Currently, approximately 40% of our annual costs are funded by your volunteer efforts. The remainder of our costs are funded by registration and city grants.

North East Basketball is run by a dedicated group of volunteers, many of whom are parents in the program or who have had children in the program. This program can only be run with the volunteer effort of its members in coaching, assistant coaching, team manager, jersey parent, time keeping, scorekeeping, and working on the executive board. Head Coaching fullfills the volunteer commitment for a family.

Can I get a refund if my child changes his mind or is injured ?

The NEBA Refund Policy:
There will be an automatic fee of $30.00 applied against the registration fee paid.
For 11U-18U, refunds will only be processed until the first scheduled regular season game of the players assigned team, after which no refunds will be made. No refunds will be provided without the return of the NEBA uniform.
For 9U, refunds will only be processed until the first week of the program, after which no refunds will be made.
Requests for refunds must be made in writing to the Executive Director at info@northeastbasketball.com

Why does NEBA have Jersey Parents and not lend every player a jersey each season?

Our jerseys are expensive. By having a Jersey Parent we have reduced the loss of jerseys, and maintained cleaner jerseys. We now do not require a jersey deposit.

Can I ask for a specific coach for my child, or for my child to play with a friend ?

We do not accept coach requests at this time.

Player requests can be considered as follows:
-Child A played for NEBA in the past and has brought a friend Child B, and wish to be placed on the same team.
-Child A wishes to play with Child B for transportation issues.

Note:
-The players must request each other in order for the request to be considered.
-Player are not allowed to play down a division to accommodate a player request. Players may move up a division, provided it does not affect the ability of NEBA to register a team in their age division, and there is space in the higher division.
-Each request is looked at on an individual basis and may not be accommodated.
-Coaches cannot request players other than their own child, or an above request to accommodate friends.

My child has another activity and cannot practice on a specific night

We will do our best to place your child on a team where practices will not conflict with alternate activities, if you indicate the conflict during the registration process. Be aware that this is dependent on coaches schedules and available gym times, and that not all requests can be accommodated. Should we not be able to accommodate a practice night, we will refund the registration, as per our Refund Policy.
